Chilean Lake District

Published: 08.01.2026

After a very fast ride to the airport ;-) and a smooth flight, we landed in Puerto Montt (located by Lake Chapo), picked up our car, and drove to Frutillar (located by Lake Llanquihue).

We find ourselves in the Chilean Lake District, surrounded by tall mountains and 4 active volcanoes. The last eruption was in 2015, but no one was harmed.

The towns here were founded in the 19th century by German (failed March Revolution) and Austrian immigrants. The houses here resemble those in the Black Forest. And there are 'cakes' and 'strudel' ;-)

The most famous volcano is Osorno. Nearby are the Petrohue waterfalls. Its peak is still crowned by a glacier. Another volcano clearly shows its missing peak.

On our boat trip to Peulla, we crossed Lake Todos los Santos.

Here, there are huge mosquitoes. The females bite... I was bitten twice right away.

Today, we are going to the Chiloé Peninsula - a 2-day trip.
