First week in AirBnB

Published: 16.07.2024

First impression of Sydney: Huge & super clean. I haven't seen any trash here yet. Manuel and I took the train from the airport to Kings Cross. We said goodbye there and I wanted to walk to my AirBnB to see a bit of the city. Unfortunately, it started raining heavily and since I didn't have my luggage (and therefore no rain jacket or umbrella), I got super wet and freezing cold. 1 hour and a few minutes later, I arrived at William's (AirBnB host), picked up the key from the mailbox, and was curious about what awaited me behind the door.
I opened the door, looked around quickly, and was shocked. It didn't look like a place where I could feel comfortable. Everything was cluttered with some random stuff. My room was small, also filled with old things, and unfortunately very grimy. There were spider webs and small insects everywhere. He mentioned that there is a spider living somewhere in the apartment, as big as his hand, and if I see it or other insects, I shouldn't panic... When I heard that, my thoughts were only: Holy shit, I hope I never see this spider and hopefully it doesn't crawl on me while I'm sleeping. When I wanted to make myself a sandwich in the evening, unfortunately cockroaches came towards me in the kitchen. My bed hasn't been freshly made for a while, because it was full of long brown & short red hairs. William is bald, so they're not from him. I had to convince myself that it is a challenge in order to stay positive here.

06.07.2024:

So, the first two days are over. Today on July 6, 2024, I slept until 10 am, then I walked to the town of Rose Bay and wanted to buy cigarettes & clothes. I've been wearing my clothes for 5 days now and it feels like the whole world can smell me. Since my luggage still hasn't arrived, I need to quickly buy deodorant, socks, t-shirts, and fresh underwear to feel a bit more comfortable.
I asked Manuel via Instagram if he wants to join me for a small shopping tour.
Before we went to meet him, I bought a pack of Marlboro Gold at the supermarket. This fucking pack cost 55 AUD, which is 37.83 EUR. So way too much! When I got on the bus with my smelly clothes and checked in with my credit card, 0.68 EUR were immediately debited from my account, even though I hadn't checked out yet. When I checked out, I had to hold the card again, so I was unsure if I did it right.
Manuel and I went to a second-hand & third-hand shop, where I bought 2 sweaters and 3 t-shirts. Unfortunately, I forgot to buy underwear and socks. When I arrived at the AirBnB, I wanted to check online for my luggage. To be honest, I strongly assumed that I would never get my backpack back, but to my best surprise, it finally said that the luggage is on a plane. AI-302 from Delhi to Sydney. The joy and relief were huge and I had a smile on my face for sure for an hour.

When I woke up, I didn't have an email and there was no one around. I spent the whole day just chilling at home and every time a car passed by, I looked out and hoped that it was the driver bringing me my backpack. I felt like a dog waiting for its owner to come home. In the evening, William and I watched "The Equalizer" and then I finally received an email that my luggage will be delivered tomorrow between 10 am and 2 pm.

Today, it finally arrived at 11:00 am, exactly 100 hours after me. It was such a relieving feeling that really lifted my mood. I immediately jumped into the shower and then I was finally able to change my underwear after 6 days. I felt like a new person. In the evening, I heard strange clicking noises from the corner of my room. When I checked, I realized that the refrigerator was leaking and no longer cooling. So I told William and we checked if all the plugs were properly inserted. The only problem: The plugs are behind a cabinet that hasn't been moved for the past 5 years. When he tried to climb over the bed, I told him that I would do it because he is an old man. So I climbed into the dustiest corner of the room and checked the plugs. It was filled with dust, spiders, and small insects. When I climbed back, my blue pants were completely gray with dust and dirt.

09.07.2024:

I woke up today around 8:00 am, walked to the bakery and bought 2 overpriced croissants so that I have something in my stomach when I meet Manuel at his hostel at 11:00. We snacked on noodles with tomato sauce and then walked to the Botanic Garden and the Opera House. The spot at the Opera House was breathtaking because it was the first time since my arrival that the weather was nice. A hostel resident joined us and as it turned out, she was from Bonn. What a coincidence, she was the first person I met besides Manuel and William. Her name is Felina and she looks quite funny. She reminds me a lot of Greta Thunberg with a bit more fullness. But to make sure Manuel understands everything, we continued speaking English. She asked if we would like to hike the Blue Mountains tomorrow and also stay in a hostel nearby.
I packed all my things in the evening because this was my last night at William's place and I'm really happy about it. Since we already walked so much today and my legs are already hurting, I'm very curious how I will do while hiking.
