Rettier, Lazyday and Sheep Gathering

Published: 04.10.2021

The past few days have been exhausting and beautiful at the same time. On Friday evening after work, there was a big party at the pub. Nora and I helped behind the bar until the bitter end, which was around 4 o'clock in the morning. As a result, the day for gathering the sheep started a bit later. Once again, there was a lot of wind but not a storm. It was fascinating to see how the horses were distributed, and I noticed once again that not all Icelanders are true horse people. Those who are, convey so much calmness to the horses that the distribution goes smoothly and the horses reach their respective sections in relative peace. Others, on the other hand, are so loud and hectic that they completely distress the horses and the distribution takes longer as a result. It's actually a shame but always interesting to watch. In the afternoon, a long period of rest was necessary to then party again at the pub in the evening. This time, there was no ball, but rather several individual parties. Hello Covid. So we eagerly went behind the bar again, and even if you don't speak Icelandic, 3 Vikings are simply 3 beers of the brand Viking. You can do that without language skills... And once again, it got incredibly late - or early... These Icelanders just party until they drop... Yesterday was simply Lazyday. Feeding the horses, taking care of the stable, a little ride, rest, sleep, and a visit to the hot tub. Perfect regeneration :-). Today, we were really challenged once again. First, the normal morning routine, feeding the horses and taking care of the stable, and then another group of travelers arrived whom we took care of. And once again, we realized that there are people who are so afraid of horses that they barely dare to touch them. It's actually unimaginable. At noon, Nora and I drove to Hvammstangi in the dwarf car and spent some money on hats and went shopping for the usual things. After all, the farm always needs something. When we came back, we had a nice surprise waiting for us in the afternoon. We all went together to gather the sheep. That means we gathered all the existing sheep on Magnus' land and drove them into the stable. Today it was really freezing cold and we actually froze at first. However, that quickly went away as we had to run up and down hills. But we all managed it really well together. In the stable, we sorted the sheep. Breeding sheep were sent back out, lambs were sorted, those who don't belong to Magnus or need to be sorted again were sorted here, then according to breeding sheep, and the less good ones go into food processing. It was really hard work, the sheep and lambs weigh quite a bit and they don't automatically follow. Magnus' mom and dad were also there and helped energetically. It was just funny because both of them came by and didn't know what was going on, and Magnus' mom jokingly said that if she had known that she had to gather and sort sheep, she might not have come. But together, we all managed it. As a reward, we had lamb roast and cold beer tonight. And it still tastes delicious. No wonder many Icelanders have an alcohol problem...
