From Neuf-Brisach to Colmar

During your excursion, you will drive through various villages of the Alsatian plain before arriving in Colmar. On the way back, there are many shaded spots as you ride along the canal,” promises the small brochure from the Office de Tourisme Alsace Rhin Brisach.

That's exactly what we have planned for today: a longer ride with the bicycle, roughly 50 km in total. From the starting point in Neuf-Brisach, we head out through the gate into the Alsatian plain with its vast fields of corn, vegetables, and grains. Passing through Wolfgantzen, Appenwihr (beautiful church with a small cemetery), and Sundhoffen, the journey continues to Colmar, where we arrive shortly before noon. We join the crowd of tourists in the old town of Colmar and let ourselves be guided through the narrow streets with the picturesque houses. Of course, our stomachs are now growling – we stop for a Flammkuchen and a fine Pinot Gris from the region.

In the afternoon, we make our way back, and as always, the entrance to the return route, namely the Canal de Colmar, is not easy to find. But thanks to the helpful brochure we have with us, we succeed on our second attempt. Along the perfectly straight Canal de Colmar, the path initially leads towards Artzenheim and then shortly before it takes a right turn, eventually bringing us back to Neuf-Brisach via the Ancien Canal du Rhône au Rhin over Kunheim, back to our camping site.

This tour requires a bit of endurance – but it's worth it with mostly car-free paths and, of course, a lot of nature.
