Between the provinces of Friesland and Groningen lies Lauwersmeer. It was formed in the 13th century after a storm surge, and in 1969 the bay was separated from the sea by a dike. Today, Lauwersmeer – alongside the adjacent Wadden Sea – is one of the bird-richest areas in Western Europe and an important stopover for migrating birds in spring and autumn.
We start our visit at the Lauwersnest visitor center in Lauwersmeer National Park and with the necessary information, we set off into the expansive national park. However, we are likely to see only a few birds today, but the landscape is uniquely beautiful, and fortunately, we have brought binoculars with us. Thus, the trip to Lauwersoog is definitely worthwhile and leaves unforgettable impressions of this unique area.
To conclude, we make a stop at the harbor of Lauwersoog and enjoy the view of the harbor while indulging in a fine ice cream. Although the weather report predicted changeable weather, it is mostly sunny and still pleasantly warm today.
