Sunflowers as far as the eye can see
Small bike tour through the Alsatian Rhine plain

Published: 01.10.2026

For once, there’s genuine (albeit brief) ferry excitement today. In the morning, we first ride our bicycles for an hour from the campsite in Julianadorp through the dunes to Den Helder. There, we head to the ferry for the crossing to Texel, the largest of the five Dutch Frisian North Sea islands. The entire loading process for cars, bicycles, and passengers is perfectly organized. The ferry departs every hour, and it takes half an hour to reach the island.
Upon arriving on the island, we make our way along the coast towards Oudeschild and Oosterend. Most of the time, the bike path runs along the dike, with views of the Wadden Sea on one side and fields and reed areas on the other side.
Texel is also well-known for its large sandy beaches on the northern side near De Koog, but that's out of reach for our muscle-driven bicycles. Nevertheless, apart from short stops in the villages, we spend the whole day in the saddle. Texel has a reputation for showcasing everything the Netherlands has to offer in a smaller space. And that is quite a lot!
