Tarragona (in Roman times it was called Tarraco) is a city and municipality in southern Catalonia, Spain (Europe). It is the capital of the province of Tarragona and the comarca of Tarragonès; it is also the headquarters of the judicial district, being judicial district no. 6 of the province of Tarragona.
Since November 30, 2000, Tarragona has been the only city in Catalonia declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its incredible and well-preserved collection of Roman-origin monuments from the historic Roman city of Tarraco, such as its famous Roman Amphitheater, its Roman Theater (currently somewhat in ruins), its Roman Forum, etc.
It has a population (according to INE data from 2023) of 138,262 inhabitants (it is the third most populated provincial capital in Catalonia after Barcelona and Lleida, and also the seventh most populated city in Catalonia) and an area of 63 km².
The beautiful Cathedral of Tarragona (officially the Holy Metropolitan Cathedral Basilica and Primate of Spain) is dedicated to Saint Tecla; it was built between the 12th and 14th centuries and is in Gothic style.
