Wine region Hermanus, pear and return journey.

Today we traveled from the coast in Hermanus to the wine region around Hermanus. A beautiful, hilly landscape, expanses, greenery, vineyards – all can be seen well in the photos.

We visited the wineries Ataraxia Wine Farm and Creation Wines – both impressively located, with stunning views over the landscape. (Photos)

The return journey took us along the spectacular coastal road (Clarence Drive) past Betty’s Bay. The sea always in sight, a route you won't forget easily. Highly recommended. Even with monkeys on the road.

In Gordon’s Bay, we made a cozy coffee stop. It reminded me once again that children from the nearby townships often beg for money.

I had actually planned to bring the children there some gifts from home – that's why I had a bag with small presents with me. However, I didn’t dare to go into the townships, and one shouldn’t do that as it can be quite dangerous.

On the last day, a little boy in Gordon's Bay came along just in time. I immediately gave him the whole bag and asked him to distribute the gifts to the other children. He was so happy – a moment that will especially stick in my memory (photo).

Along the way, we also discovered “other” traffic signs – I was able to photograph some of them. They are typical for the country and still bring a smile. (Photos)

From the hotel, I photographed from the rooftop terrace where you could see how close luxury and poverty live together. Unfortunately, I cannot post a video. But it’s about 500 meters.

Social impressions

What is still very noticeable:

In many areas, actually in almost all areas, whether parks, chambermaids, road workers, in taverns and restaurants – almost exclusively Black people work for Whites, while the guests are predominantly White. This separation is visible in everyday life and remains thought-provoking.

Also notable are 99% white cars, it was often difficult to find my own.

Final thought

South Africa touches – through its nature, its contrasts, its beauty, and its hospitality.

Unfortunately, this journey comes to an end.
