About Aveiro

The City

Aveiro is the capital of the eponymous district. It is located on the Atlantic, south of Porto. The city is also a bishopric. Due to its three canals, Canal de São Roque, Canal das Pirâmides, and Canal dos Santos Mârtires, the city is often referred to as the Venice of Portugal. As a result, tourist canal rides are also offered.

Ria of Aveiro

This is the name of the water landscape near Aveiro. It stretches between Ovar in the north and Mira in the south, about 45 km along the coast. Tides provide the area with saltwater, while rivers supply freshwater. These conditions enable a diverse range of life. This biodiversity has traditionally sustained the local fishermen, whose catch is sold fresh at the markets and is highly recommended.

Within the city limits of Aveiro, the Ria is used for salt extraction. This practice seemed limited during winter, likely due to low evaporation.

Our Boy... São Gonçalinho! And his Party.

São Gonçalo is said to have lived in the 12th-13th century. It is believed he was born in 1190 (near present-day Vizela) and died in Amarante. The São Gonçalinho of Aveiro, our boy, as he is affectionately called by the people in Aveiro's most typical neighborhood, the Beira Mar quarter, is known for many virtues: matchmaker, jokester, fun-loving spirit, peacemaker, protector, and healer of bone ailments.

According to local tradition, São Gonçalinho once helped a fisherman who had trouble walking. In gratitude, he vowed to build a chapel in honor of São Gonçalinho. After fully recovering from his illness, he fulfilled his promise and built the Capela de São Gonçalinho.
