Stralsund & Darß: Sea Magic and the 5 km Hiking Surprise 🌊🐢❄️

This weekend we decided to take a spontaneous trip to Stralsund. After our last visit to Rügen where we visited the Ozeaneum, this time we planned to explore the Sea Museum and the wild nature of Darß.

Overnight Stay at the B&B

We arrived on Saturday evening and stayed at the brand new B&B Hotel. It's modern, centrally located, and the breakfast on Sunday morning was the perfect start to the day.

Pure Winter Feeling: When the Sea Freezes ⚓

Right at the harbor of Stralsund, we were greeted by a fascinating sight: a solid ice layer was covering the water. Since seawater freezes at about -1.9 °C, you can imagine how freezing cold it really was! Seeing the boats so firmly trapped in the ice gave the entire weekend an almost magical atmosphere.

Sea Museum: A Highlight for Explorers

The Sea Museum absolutely delighted us. Our eldest was particularly captivated by the section on Earth History and the interactive displays.

• Highlight: The two giant sea turtles at the end of the tour.
• Photo Fun: The huge jaw of a Megalodon, where the kids could pose.

💰 My Savings Tip: There are combo tickets that are valid for all three museums (Ozeaneum, Sea Museum, and Natureum). The best part: They are valid for 3 months! Since we travel to the Baltic Sea often, it's perfect. The ticket has been used up now, but it was absolutely worth it.




The Trek to the Natureum: Beware, Winter Trap! ❄️🌬️

After lunch, we headed to the Natureum at Darßer Ort Lighthouse. Here awaited a real challenge: The walk from the parking lot to the lighthouse is a total of 5 kilometers one way!

What you must know in winter:

• No Transport: The Darß train wasn't running and there were no carriages around.
• Wind & Cold: The wind was absolutely intense and really blasted us.
• Carrying Challenge: Since our youngest absolutely refused to go in the carrier, the 5 km for Axel and me meant: carrying without any aids! It was quite a workout.
• Darkness: A very important point - the path is not illuminated! We were lucky and managed to get back just in time during twilight, right before it became pitch dark.

My Conclusion for You

The Sea Museum is fantastic! But for anyone wanting to visit Darßer Ort in winter, be sure to pack plenty of changes of clothes (unfortunately we had too little spare with us), wear windproof clothing, and set off early enough to avoid being surprised by the darkness.
