04.06.2022 (Saturday) 1. Arrival on Föhr

Published: 04.06.2022

I left the house on time, my friends were also ready to go, and only the car groaned a bit under the weight. At ten o'clock, we treated ourselves to a small breakfast, a cigarette, and a walk for Ayko. Except for short cigarette breaks and the usual construction site detours, we made it through the Elbe Tunnel pretty well.

The mood was great. We sang loudly to the radio music and laughed a lot at small moments. Gabi once said to me when I braked, 'Irmi, you don't need to brake.' 'Why?' I asked back, surprised. And she dryly replied, 'I've already braked for you.' It occurred to me that I should probably have an additional metal plate welded in if Gabi rides with me more often.

Even when a car with a boat trailer drove past us, she said, 'Oh, there's my cleaning lady too. I should pay her less.' When we saw the next boat, I said, 'Look, there's another cleaning lady of yours.' But she corrected me, 'No, that's my gardener.' And of course, the voice from the back came, 'What are you laughing about?' because Gisela couldn't always hear the nonsense we were talking in the front.

There were the usual traffic jams at the construction sites, but everything was within a normal range. It got crowded in front of the Elbe Tunnel. We pushed forward in the car avalanche for three-quarters of an hour. And when we saw the light again, the traffic jam dissolved and we made faster progress. The landscape had changed by then. We were greeted by vastness, and the closer we got to our ferry, as we were now driving on country roads, the more reed-thatched houses lined the roadside. We also drove through small towns with cute, small old houses, so we came up with the idea of settling down here and forming a threesome flat share. The idea was great, but in the end, none of us wanted to leave our home and family.

We finally reached the ferry port at 3:30 pm. Since we had some time, we strolled around and then discovered a restaurant. We went in and Gaby and I were pleased to see that they had half crab sandwiches. But almost ten euros? That wasn't necessary. So, we ordered plain curry sausage with fries.

We were a bit slow in getting on our way when the ferry arrived, but when we finally reached the car, we were able to merge into the rolling traffic and drive onto the ferry. It was difficult for Gisela to walk up the steep stairs, and when we had to go back down, I discovered an elevator, how convenient.

When we were in the car and entering the port, the ramp was already lowered, and I said, 'Should we try if my car is an amphibious vehicle and drive off?' The employee standing next to my open window heard that and called out to his colleague, 'Loosen the rope, these people want to drive off.' And he actually did it, and we laughed again.

We arrived at our destination through many backroads after another 30 minutes. A house with two vacation apartments was waiting for us, and Mrs. Korf assigned us to our apartment. Then the great hauling and setting up began. Everything had to be carried up the stairs. Oh man, couldn't the suitcases and bags be lighter? Then unpack, have a bottle of sparkling wine, and enjoy a coastal mist. In between, lots of laughter, a quick dinner, and writing the blog. Tomorrow we'll head to the beach.
