From Cintsa to the Addo Elephant National Park

Published: 23.10.2022

Yesterday we left our wonderful accommodation in Cintsa with a heavy heart. Heidi and Gerhardt, our German hosts, were so kind. Especially the breakfast they prepared for us was absolutely fantastic. There were smoothies, homemade bread, and so much more. Oh, we would have loved to stay longer.

But around 10:30 am, we finally got in the car. Our next destination was the Addo Elephant National Park. We chose to take the coastal road to Addo. Of course, when we think of a coastal road, we immediately think of a "French" coastal road. But that wasn't the case, we were surrounded by endless hills and landscapes. We only caught glimpses of the sea when we drove through the towns, otherwise unfortunately not :-(. But that didn't matter because these vast landscapes with their diverse scenery are more than dreamy.

We had to drive through East London, a bustling city, and that was quite an experience. I still don't understand who has the right of way in a roundabout or at an intersection. But it always works flawlessly, and I'm getting quite good at driving on the left side of the road. I often take the wrong route on the highway ramps, but Daniela always steps in and guides me correctly :-). Yesterday, once again, there were cows and a whole herd of goats on the expressway. We turned on the hazard lights, and the other drivers knew there was something on the road.

Then the navigation system took us off the so-called coastal road, and we stood in front of a gate. The driver asked something, and we just said 'yes'. We didn't understand a word. But we showed him our route, and he let us through. We still had 32 km to go to the accommodation. Then we saw a sign that said Addo E.N.P. How did we get into the park? Apparently, slowly we drove along the unpaved bumpy road, and we were amazed when a cat crossed our path. What was that, from behind it looked like a lion?! It crossed the road, and we think it was a lynx. We were thrilled. On the way, we also saw a gigantic elephant and a herd of elephants. Thanks to Google Maps for this great detour and to the gate attendants who let us through.

Our accommodation is beautifully located amidst citrus plantations, with a breathtaking view of the mountains. Our lodge is fantastic and huge.

In the morning, we enjoy the pool to the fullest, and this afternoon we will go on a guided safari. In the evening, there will be a bushfire dinner. We are very excited. For me, it's a beautiful birthday. Daniela has decorated our lodge nicely. The hotel staff sang me a birthday song in African, and there was delicious cake!
