Royal Natal Drakensberg Park

Published: 13.10.2022

At night, half asleep, I went to the toilet. Unfortunately, I forgot about the step we have in our room. So I got out of bed and fell straight down the step into the room. Despite being tired, I quickly got back on my feet. Facing the toilet, I walked towards the step and ended up on the floor again. It scared me so much. Luckily, I didn't hurt myself in both falls.

After a delicious breakfast, we drove to the aforementioned park by car today. The drive took about 50 minutes and we passed through a small village on the way. People were standing by the side of the road. The people also position themselves at the speed bumps where the cars have to slow down completely. This gives them the opportunity to approach the cars and present their carvings, for example. Or they just want to hitch a ride. I found it disturbing when a little boy with carved animals came to our car. When I continued driving, he ran after us for a while, despite the insane heat. I think it's really sad that we're not allowed to stop. But safety comes first. When we arrived at the national park, a friendly employee from the Visitor Center recommended a great hiking trail to us. But before we were allowed to start, we had to register in a book. In case we get lost! Since I'm typing here, this obviously didn't happen :-)!

We started in bright sunshine. We first had to pass through a wooded area. There was no view here, of course. But when we got out of the woods, we couldn't stop being amazed. We both kept saying, wow, look over there and look over there. The panoramic view of the Drakensberg was amazing. The photos also show the different landscapes and vegetation. On one side, it looked dry and barren, and on the other side, it was lush green. Yup, we're still extremely excited about our hike!

We were able to refresh and rest at small waterfalls along the way. Eventually, we noticed the dark clouds behind us and then it thundered from that direction. But they were still far away and according to an employee, it wouldn't start thundering until 3:00 p.m. on.

On our way back, we saw a small bearded dragon. It was basking on a tree trunk. Then we were once again distracted by the incredible sight of the mountains, as two baboons roamed the meadows. It was amazing how big one of them was. We eyed each other and then went our separate ways :-).

When we were back at the Visitor Center, it actually started to rain very lightly! We high-fived each other, that was a real spot landing. We thanked the employee again for the great tour recommendation.

On our way back to the resort, the announced thunderstorm started. We're looking forward to our dinner. We already enjoyed it so much yesterday. We were both so full that we said we wouldn't eat as much tomorrow (today). Hmmmm, what do I care about what I said yesterday... in that sense, warm greetings from the two of us.

We are deeply impressed by South Africa!!!!!
