Maligne Canyon and Maligne Lake

Published: 02.10.2023

Today we had sunshine all day. We took advantage of this and set off towards Maligne Canyon early in the morning. On the way there we saw some elk again along and on the roads.

We made our first stop at the Maligne River and followed it on foot for a while. While we were on a hiking trail between the edge of the forest and the Maligne River , a black bear suddenly appeared on the path about 30 m in front of us. We were very surprised by this encounter because we were particularly loud to avoid it. Fortunately, the bear wasn't interested in us and, after briefly examining us, trotted back into the thicket. Unfortunately, we were not prepared to take photos with our smartphone in this situation, so there is only one picture on the camera, which we cannot upload here.

After the bear disappeared, we continued on foot. Back at the car, we drove to Maligne Canyon and followed a trail to the waterfall. We then continued by car across Medicine Lake to our actual destination today: Maligne Lake . There we took a short walk to Moose Lake, hidden in the forest - and were actually able to see two moose there!

In the afternoon a boat trip on Maligne Lake to the famous Spirit Island was on the agenda. We had 15 minutes to stay there to enjoy the scenery, so we disembarked and walked along the shore for a bit. Enrico was almost run over by a chipmunk, which was probably blinded by the sun...

All in all, a wonderful day that we can hopefully experience more of here in Canada!
