Sardinia 2023

Our Sardinia trip begins in the south of the island. As we approach Cagliari in the late afternoon, the view of the coast gives us an idea of the beautiful, rugged landscape that awaits us in the first few days.

We will drive our tour counterclockwise, so that we will be looking at the southeast for the next few days.

Our first stop takes us to what is said to be the largest cave in Europe. You can walk 850 meters into the Grotte di Su Marmuri and it is divided into several large halls. The dimensions of the first cave alone are impressive.

Pedra Longa is a dolomite limestone block and an integral part (broken) of the huge Baunei plateau. Its "needle-like" shape rises from the sea to a height of 128 m: it is one of the highest rocky peaks on the island rising directly from the sea and was declared a natural monument in 1993.

Cala Goloritzè is a small, wild bay with a white pebble beach. It is particularly famous for the 100-meter-high limestone rock needle L'Aguglia - also called Punta Caroddi.

You can only reach the bay on foot by descending 500 metres and then climbing back up again. 🥾😎

Orgosolo, a Sardinian bandit village.

The history of this community is a chronicle of horror. At the same time, the town is considered a nest of resistance, a center of rebellion against the Italian government. The residents of Orgosolo take on everyone - including the state and the military. On top of that, it is a popular tourist destination because of its striking political murals.

The Gola Gorropu is one of the deepest gorges in Europe with steep walls up to 500 meters high in the rugged Supramonte mountains. The deeper you go into the gorge, the more difficult the path becomes and gradually larger boulders block the way.

The North

Our small hotel is located in the very north of the island, overlooking Corsica, and directly on the Spiaggia Rena Bianca beach.

After such a wonderful sunrise we enjoy our breakfast on the terrace.

Capo Testa on the northern tip of Sardinia can be described as a natural wonder in good conscience. Mighty granite formations, shaped into bizarre structures by wind and weather, broken up by individual bays and valleys, line the beautiful coast here. The Faro di Capo Testa lighthouse, the Valle della Luna valley, and the beautiful beaches are among the highlights of the peninsula.

On the way to Porto Torres you pass countless small bays with crystal clear water and bizarre rocks.

If you are willing to climb over the rocks a bit, the bay is all yours and invites you to cool off in the sea.

In the very north of the La Pelosa peninsula, nature has created bizarre rocks. Some are razor-sharp, some glitter in a variety of colors, and others are streaked with white granite.

La Pelosa beach is known for its fine, light sand. This gives the water its spectacular colors, which are usually a bright turquoise. Unfortunately, it is usually overcrowded and people use it as an additional source of income that is unprecedented elsewhere.

In order to protect the light sand, it is not permitted to place towels directly on the beach. You must use a raffia mat as a base - which are of course sold by street vendors. This regulation is strictly enforced and violations are punishable by fines of €100.

The Neptune Grotto is located one meter above sea level at the foot of a 110 meter high steep rock face and can only be visited when the sea is calm. It can be reached via a staircase with 654 steps in the almost vertical cliff face.

Only a few hundred meters of the extensive, approximately four-kilometer-long cave system are accessible to the public. Experts estimate the age of the Neptune Grotto to be around 2 million years.

Beautiful hike around Capo Caccia near Alghero. The limestone cliffs here plunge almost vertically into the sea for 200 metres.

The city was a Catalan enclave for over 400 years. It was conquered by the Spanish in 1354 and this influence can still be felt in the city. Part of the population still communicates in an old Catalan dialect and the streets also have Catalan names.

Along the west coast

On our way south we pass the beautiful town of Bosa. The ruins of Castello Malaspina can be seen from afar. The small alleys and squares invite you to linger.

Not far from Bosa lies the unusual bay of Cane Malu. The surroundings somehow look like a lunar landscape, but the crystal-clear water is like an invitation to cool off and swim.

On the Sinis peninsula, at Cape San Marco, is the archaeological site of the ancient city of Tharros. It was founded by the Phoenicians at the end of the 8th century BC. Today you can visit the remains of baths, temples and tombs.

We leave the excavation site to the left and instead take a hike around the peninsula.

There is another special feature on the west coast of the peninsula. The beaches of Is Arutas and Mari Ermi stretch for kilometers and are also called "beaches of rice grains" because of the tiny polished quartz stones. Depending on the light, they shimmer in different colors.

We drive back to the very south of the island, past beautiful bays and cliffs.

We spend the last two days on the beach and in our beautiful little hotel, where we relax and reflect on our Sardinia trip.
