We have landed in Aquilas at the beautiful Playa Arroz. There are countless campers on a huge site by the sea. We snag a spot with bushes, giving us our own little garden. What more could one want? Our friends Dany, Lara, and Björn are also here, and we are having a great time together. The next Dana is approaching, and we expect 10 days of rainy weather. It is indeed pouring down like from buckets, and small rivers quickly form, flowing towards the sea. Some campers flee to higher ground, but we want to stay and closely observe the weather. Huge amounts of water are coming down from the mountains and flowing around our campers. The desert-like landscape with its bone-dry ground is not used to such quantities of water. Our campers are doing great, and we are spared from water intrusion. However, entire sections of the beach are collapsing, forming huge craters. When we go to fill up water at the popular Anibal gas station, we are quite astonished. The parking area with over 200 campers has been flooded, and it looks terrible. There is mud and muck everywhere, and people are trying to unload and clean their wet cars. We aren’t able to get water or fuel here today. Aquilas has taken quite a hit this time, and it’s expected to rain for a while longer. Once again, we have incredible luck with our camping spot. Nothing has happened to us 😊. These almost two weeks are coming to an end, and finally, when the sun comes out again, the landscape literally explodes. The usually barren mountain slopes are glowing green and colorful. Flowers bloom everywhere, and the birds are chirping. Spring is here.
Overall, we stayed at Playa Arroz for four weeks. Lucy got sick and vomited blood. We had to go to the vet, who diagnosed her with a gastrointestinal illness. We cook diet food, and now she is fit again. Time flies by. Kilian bakes delicious treats for us, and Björn and Lara sell homemade cinnamon rolls, cheesecake, and apple pie. They are sold out in no time. We visit the large market on Saturday. Here, you can find cheap vegetables and all kinds of clothing. Our friends Susanne and Wolfgang, whom we met in Latvia in 2018, come to visit and stay for a few days. We meet Gina again, whom we got to know last year, and also Evelin and Ralph, whom we met in Tarifa, suddenly appear. The joy of reuniting is great, and we have wonderful days together before everyone goes their separate ways.
We are also slowly feeling the urge to move on, even though it is hard for us to leave our friends. Our friend Dany is already in Switzerland, and we also want to get the wheels rolling again. Once again, we had a wonderful time in Aquilas with amazing people.
Now, a few days later, we are at Mazarron by the sea. The bad weather still hasn't quite passed. The sky keeps turning black, and it rains. But the worst is over, and we are curious about what else awaits us on the Mediterranean coast heading north 😊
