Doubtful Sound: A Day at the End of the World

Day X – An extraordinary, fantastic day full of adventure

Today was one of those rare days when reality surpasses every expectation. A day that burns into my memory – intense, emotionally charged, and shaped by a nature that seems almost unreal in its grandeur and beauty.

As we entered Doubtful Sound, it felt like stepping into a scene from The Lord of the Rings. Steep rock faces everywhere, endless waterfalls, deep fog, dramatic lighting. Every curve of the fjord told its own story. Nature was so present, so overpowering that words barely suffice.

But the true highlight came when we reached the entrance to the open sea and sailed out into the Tasman Sea. Suddenly, the fjord opened up, and we faced this untamed force. The sea was alive, wild, full of energy. The waves carried us back and forth like a gigantic ship's swing. I was prepared – seasickness was not an issue – and I could fully enjoy this dance of the elements. It was powerful, free, and limitless.

In that moment, a thought settled deep within me: Now I am truly at the other end of the world. It can't get any further from home. A feeling of distance, vastness, and at the same time a deep connection to the moment. On the map, it looks incredible – but live, you feel it deep in your bones.

I took photos, but they only show a fraction of this grandeur. I sent videos to my family so that at least a hint of this moment could be visible. And yet, the most important thing remains hard to transport: the atmosphere, the silence, the power of nature.

What I missed was my partner. Such moments are meant to be shared – not as a jab, but as an honest, clear thought. It was the only element that could have made this perfect day even more perfect.

Now we are on our way back to the hotel. Arrival around 8–8:30 PM New Zealand time. And tomorrow, the next chapter awaits: meeting at 7:30 AM, heading into the mountains, 4.5 hours of hard work to be able to stand in the river. A completely different adventure – but surely one that will be just as intense.

But for today, there is primarily one thing:

An extraordinary, fantastic day. A true highlight of the New Zealand trip. An experience that is hardly describable in its beauty – and that is exactly why it remains unforgettable.
