On December 25th, the journey continued to Queenstown. On the way, we passed several lupines and made a short stop in Wanaka to see the famous Wanaka Tree in the lake. Queenstown is beautiful, and one day we took the Skyline Gondola up a mountain, which offered a great view of Queenstown and the mountains. The next day we made a day trip to Arrowtown, a small older town with cute shops and a little river.
Our last stop before Stewart Island was in Manapouri at Fjordland. There we took a short hike to a lookout point and went swimming in the lake in the evening.
On December 29th, we took the ferry to Stewart Island and celebrated New Year's Eve there. My highlights were seeing a kiwi right in front of our tent and our trip to Ulva Island, where we saw many rare birds and sea lions. We spent New Year's Eve like all the other islanders at the only bar on the island, with live music and fireworks. The whole evening was very nice, and the next morning we took the ferry back to the mainland.
