Boat trip on the Sarapiqui River (25.4.22)

Published: 25.04.2022

Today we took a boat trip on the Sarapiqui River. When we arrived, we noticed that (how nice!) there are no crowds of tourists. We meet Pamela, our guide for today, and she explains that we will also stay together. Well, that's something. So, off to the boat where Captain José will ferry us exclusively along the river for 2 hours. We laugh a lot with both of them and see many animals: a really large crocodile, a turtle, countless birds, including anhingas and kingfisher (yes, that's right, I couldn't remember all the names, so end of the enumeration 😂) and some iguanas. We pass by a village on the river that gets washed away every year during the rainy season floods. During that time, the people move to the village and come back later. Well, yeah, that's one way to do it. 🤔

Furthermore, we learn that the children of the villagers here go to the river alone at the age of 4, exactly, for swimming. Well, okay, find all the mistakes. Didn't we just see a crocodile of about 4 meters long on the banks of the 3-meter deep river? According to Pamela, there are no accidents known with caimans or crocodiles. The crocodiles find enough food in the river and are not interested in humans. Well then, good luck, but I still don't want to swim there. Sebastian, who didn't want to do the tour (too hot, too stupid, too boring), looks for animals, talks to Pamela and José in German, and looks for the animals he found on the overview board. Well done. Finally, it gets a bit long, so I hand him an audiobook to listen to. And poof, silence. For the next whole hour, even in the car 😂

After a successful tour, we treat ourselves to lunch at a very local soda (local restaurant), the service is nice, the food is great, they don't sell ice cream here, but hey, they have a private fridge, so we scoop some into a glass for the kid and charge a dollar..... Pura Vida! Next to us, there is a board where fruit is placed for birds - great birds don't come by, but there is a green basilisk (lizard) that likes bananas.

Afterwards, we are grilled and sweaty again, the weather is really intense. Hot and humid - so we spend the next two hours in the pool, and for sure we will find some frogs later.

Tomorrow, rafting and departure to La Fortuna to the Arenal Volcano!
