First Group Day

Published: 30.12.2024

Our group trip officially starts at 5 PM, but we are all already here or have landed by now. Today, I will be moving from my hostel to our hotel and meeting the others. We will take the ferry to Watson Bay, wander around a bit, and then jump into the sea at what seems to be the only nudist-friendly beach (it’s best not to overdo the getting to know each other on the first day 😉). In the evening, we’ll have dinner at Darling Harbor.

There isn't much more to tell, but what is always good is - LISTS!

Things that are different in Sydney than in Munich:

  • Soft drink bottles here hold 600mL instead of 500mL
  • Cars drive on the left
  • The Flat White costs only about €2 something
  • Burger King is called Hungry Jacks
  • On holidays and weekends, there is an automatic surcharge for meals
  • You can really always pay with card
  • Tap water tastes like chlorine

Things that are the same in Sydney and Munich:

  • Cars drive wildly
  • There is catcalling on the street
  • Everyone is incredibly busy
  • At the food and tourist hotspots, you have to stand in line. A long time.
  • Fishermen try their luck in the water in front of the city skyline
  • You can ride public transport for over two hours and still be in the city
  • You can see great nature just outside the city

Things I've discovered and like about Sydney:

  • Coke with raspberry flavor
  • When the sun reflects off the glass facades during sunset, sparkling over the city
  • Cockatoos (like Kiki from Enid Blyton's adventure series!)
  • The huge selection of shortbread and crackers in the supermarket
  • This turquoise water and how quickly you can get to the beach
  • That maybe I am indeed 16.3% a big city girl

Things I've discovered in Sydney and (still) don’t like:

  • Vegemite.
