Explore Colombo on 15.03.2020

Published: 30.03.2020

In the morning, I slept until 9 o'clock. I could have slept even longer, but I want to quickly get used to the time change. Here it is now +5.5 hours to Accra and +4.5 hours to Germany. At 9:30 I had my breakfast, which was super delicious with toast, eggs, sausages, and tomatoes. After that, I sorted all my documents and looked for hostels. Later, I went on foot to explore the city. By the way, it's about 33°C here and the air is even more humid than it was in Accra. I also have to get used to the heat again after all the air-conditioned air at the airport and on the planes (in which I froze even in a sweater and leggings). The city itself is pretty nice and you can see everything on foot. A huge difference compared to Teshie. Only paved roads, no sandy paths, and absolutely no litter or cows and pigs roaming the streets :D Later, I took a small city tour with a tuk-tuk, which again turned out to be a very interesting experience. At the beginning of the tour, 200 Rupees were agreed upon for 1 hour of driving. After the driver and I had a nice conversation, the driver eventually asked me to go into a souvenir shop for 5 minutes so that he could get 5 liters of gasoline for free. At first, I didn't think much of it and thought, ah well, it's not that bad, you can take a look. To be honest, I left after 2 minutes because the situation was too ridiculous for me. The driver was naturally disappointed, especially when I didn't want to go to the second shop. At the end of the tour, he actually demanded 2000 Rupees instead of 200 Rupees (about 1€). I can afford that because everything here is really cheap, but I still thought it was outrageous. I then gave the driver a piece of my mind about how cheeky that was and that he should at least be honest and not try to scam people. At the beginning, he also kept saying that he had already said 200 before the tour, but when he realized that it wasn't working with me, he accepted the 200 Rupees and quickly disappeared. That was another adventure! By the way, the city here was very empty and there were hardly any people on the streets. At first, I thought it was because today is Sunday, but upon inquiry, it is due to the Corona virus. After that, I bought fried rice with egg for dinner for the equivalent of 0.70 € and I'm very glad that I'm used to spicy food by now :D I enjoyed it in a park with a view of the sunset over the Indian Ocean.
