Today we left Tallinn and headed to Lahemaa National Park. Our first route took us to the bog. To ensure that we and other visitors do not sink in it, kind people have laid kilometer-long wooden paths through the bog. This allowed us to have an impressive experience, where we could just watch and marvel with dry feet.
While searching for a parking space, we unexpectedly(!) came across a historical site. Near Juminda, approximately 40 war and merchant ships of the Soviet Union were destroyed by Finnish and especially German bombers and mines during their retreat from Tallinn in August 1941. Around 12,000 to 15,000 people lost their lives, many of them civilians. A monument commemorates this event with the words 'A new war begins when the last one is forgotten.'
