A German hero in Omaruru

In Omaruru, we discovered the Franke Tower, erected in honor of the German captain Viktor Franke, and were astonished: It commemorates the glorious victory of the Germans over the Herero and the German 'heroes'.

No trace of the victims and no further information about the background of the Herero uprising.

Yet for many years, the Herero from Omaruru have gathered annually to remember at this very Franke Tower. Are they subversively undermining the German commemoration of heroes?

And why is there evidently no appropriate memorial at this site, despite Namibia being independent for more than 35 years? My attempt at an answer: The Herero today - also due to the genocide - are only an ethnic minority in Namibia, and they are further splintered into several local subgroups. Thus, this German nationalist memorial tower seemingly has good chances of survival, especially since it appears that no critical awareness has been developed within the German community in today's Namibia that could restore dignity to the victims of the Germans.

It's a pity, really!
