Rest day in Lübeck

Despite it being a rest day, I got up early because the weather was beautiful again. The day must be seized. Since I hadn't booked breakfast, I ate my herring, which would have spoiled in the heat.

Overnight, I had to charge my two batteries in the room, because contrary to the announcement, there were no outlets in the parking garage.

Even though it was quite a walk to the old town, I didn’t take the bus. I believe I was actually faster on foot. The schedule seems to be somewhat limited. In Switzerland, at least in the cities, we are used to something different.

I had actually planned to follow the order of sights suggested by Genie. But when I saw that almost every corner had something of interest, I decided against it and just took photos wherever something special was to be seen. Here, however, is Genie’s suggestion:

### 1. **Lübeck Town Hall**

The Lübeck Town Hall was built in the 13th century and is one of the most significant Gothic buildings in Northern Germany. It is known for its magnificent facade and impressive interiors. Particularly worth seeing are the council chamber and the unique wooden ceiling.

### 2. **St. Mary's Church (Marienkirche)**

St. Mary's Church is one of the largest brick churches in Northern Germany, built between 1250 and 1350. It impresses with its high vaulted ceiling and has numerous artworks, including a beautiful astronomical clock and a large organ. The historic bell tower is also climbable, offering a splendid view of the city.

### 3. **Holstentor**

The Holstentor is a symbol of the city of Lübeck and was built in the 15th century. It has two distinctive towers and an impressive entrance. Inside, there is a museum that illustrates the history of the city and its role as a Hanseatic city.

### 4. **Old Town Island**

The Old Town Island of Lübeck is surrounded by water and characterized by narrow streets, picturesque squares, and historical brick architecture. Here you will find numerous cafés, shops, and small art galleries. A stroll through the Old Town is a must to experience Lübeck's charm.

### 5. **St. Peter's Church (Peterkirche)**

St. Peter's Church (also known as Petrikirche) is the oldest church in Lübeck and was built in the 13th century. It is known for its splendid bell tower, from which you can view the city from a bird's-eye perspective. The interior of the church also has much to offer, including beautiful altars and an impressive organ.

### 6. **Buddenbrook House**

The Buddenbrook House is the former residence of Thomas Mann's family and is now a museum that focuses on the life and work of the Mann family. The exhibitions offer insights into literary history and the cultural significance of Lübeck.

### 7. **St. Anne's Museum**

St. Anne's Museum is located in a former 14th-century monastery and showcases a variety of artworks, everyday objects, and sculptures that illuminate the history of Lübeck. It also hosts temporary exhibitions and guided tours.

### 8. **Beethoven Square and the Trave**

Beethoven Square is a lovely place to relax and offers a picturesque view of the Trave and the historic buildings along the river. A walk along the riverside promenade is especially delightful, particularly in nice weather.

### 9. **Bakery D. J. H. Schmidt**

Here you can try the famous Lübeck marzipan, which is a local specialty. The bakery has a long tradition and offers a variety of marzipan products that are artistically designed and delicious.

You can now try to match the many photos to the correct building.

After I found a few quiet spots away from the tourist hustle, I took a boat trip around the entire island. From the water, Lübeck looks completely different. The boat captain also served as the speaker. Rarely have I experienced such an entertaining yet informative harbor tour.
