40 to Grünwald

Route: 78 kilometers, cumulative: 3,606 kilometers | Elevation: 280, cumulative elevation 15,120 meters, distance from home: 278 kilometers (as the crow flies)

Grünwald near Munich was my last planned stop. I reached it today on a wonderful stage. So now only the journey home lies ahead, which I will begin tomorrow.

But back to my tour today to Grünwald, which I was able to complete under ideal conditions. By ideal conditions, I mean both the weather and the route. I believe that the kilometers I had to ride on roads with traffic can be counted on one hand. Everything else was on bike paths or roads that are not to be used by traffic. Specifically, I want to highlight the Isar bike path. Although it is mostly unpaved, it is made of fine gravel and compacted. So it is ideal and pleasant to ride.

The season I chose for my Baltic tour is also quite good. There are still few touring cyclists like me out and about. Accordingly, I encountered very few cyclists, and for many kilometers, I was completely alone. I only had to take a small detour once, as the path had been destroyed by flooding.

I also didn't have to traverse many cities. Even in Munich, where I really had to cross from north to south, I barely noticed it. There were separated bike paths everywhere, or I could ride along the Isar here as well.

The Isar is a beautiful river with mostly gently flowing water. However, there are also very wild sections with large stones and a steep gradient. I had to ascend that gradient, a total of 280 meters of elevation, which I didn't even notice since it was a regular climb.

At some point, I passed underneath the approach to Munich Airport. First, I saw the planes in front of me, then above me, and soon they were behind me. Meanwhile, Munich was still far ahead of me; the airport is quite a distance from the city.

Along the Isar, you can ride on both sides, and there are wonderful bridges that connect these two sides. Most of these bridges are for cyclists and pedestrians only. Ideal for circular tours in a beautiful recreational area.

Since I only rode on the outskirts of the city, I didn't see many tourist attractions. However, I know Munich from before, and in any case, I was more looking forward to my friends, with whom I was able to spend a few happy hours afterwards.
