Straße der Staufer
The eastern region of the Swabian Forest, about 8 km from #Göppingen offers a charming environment with attractions such as the #KlosterAdelberg, the #Herrenbachstausee with lake paths and forest adventure trails - a round that the whole family can enjoy. On a hill in the eastern #Schurwald, between the Rems and Fils rivers, lies a gem that one might not necessarily expect behind the massive monastery walls of Adelberg – the #Ulrichskapelle. Inside, images tell their fascinating stories. Until 1851, #Adelberg was called Hundsholz and was connected to the Adelberg Monastery, which was founded as a Premonstratensian monastery in 1178. In the 19th century, the monastery was incorporated into Hundsholz and was later renamed after the monastery, which sounds more melodious. The tour starts at the Adelberg Monastery along the road of the Staufer, circles the Herrenbachstausee and returns through the monastery courtyard back to the parking lot. Here at the Adelberg Monastery, alongside the historic buildings, there are also newer structures, while much of the old has unfortunately been destroyed and removed. However, very well preserved are the 1,100 m monastery walls, the Ulrichskapelle, several monastery buildings, and at the main portal stands a #Stauferstele. The district of Göppingen is often referred to as the 'Stauferkreis' and features the lion in its coat of arms as a symbol of the Staufer. This references the #Stauferzeit, in which the land around its ancestral castle from 1070 became the center of the Duchy of Swabia.
