EXPLOSIVE SURPRISE - the Eberstadter dripstone cave

Rudolf Gaukel had been wondering for a few days. Whenever the blasting engineer had drilled a borehole into the massive rock at the Eberstadt quarry and then inserted his explosive cartridges, they disappeared without a trace. The mountain seemed to swallow the cartridges as if it didn't want to be torn apart by them; Gaukel peeks into the black borehole, and away go the cartridges. On December 13, 1971, Gaukel was preparing another blast in the quarry, this time he noticed nothing unusual as he inserted the cartridges into the mountain, pressed the detonator, and with a bang, the cartridges exploded in the rock. When the smoke cleared, a huge crack gaped in the rock. Gaukel and his colleagues climbed through this crack, and what presented itself to them inside the mountain would soon be classified by experts as 'one of the most beautiful and largest caves in Southern Germany.' The Eberstadt dripstone cave near Buchen in the Odenwald has been discovered, and Rudolf Gaukel has written a story that even his great-grandchildren will tell each other. We have the luck to discover a true natural wonder in our region – the dripstone cave in northern Baden-Württemberg, more precisely in the district of Eberstadt in Buchen. With the discovery of this cave, a cave was found for the first time in the Lower Muschelkalk. Since its opening in 1973, it has developed into a significant tourist destination. Over 70,000 visitors come each year to experience the fascinating natural spectacle. The Eberstadt dripstone cave is one of the four gateways to the Geo-Naturpark Bergstraße-Odenwald and thus also provides an ideal starting point to explore the geological peculiarities of the surrounding area. The Geological Trail, which starts directly from the cave and leads through the quarry and the subsequent Muschelkalk foothills, is particularly recommended. The cave is estimated to be one to two million years old, and we can be proud to admire it in all its splendor. The accessible area is about 600 meters long and leads us through the fascinating Muschelkalk formations, which we can enjoy at our leisure. The path is accessible for strollers and disabled persons so that everyone can discover the beauty of the cave. What excites us particularly is the rich dripstone decoration that adorns the walls and ceilings: slender and conical stalagmites and stalactites, sinter flags, sinter terraces, and crystals. Some dripstone formations even have their own names – like the 'White Lady of Eberstadt', who mysteriously roams, or the 'Elephant Trunk', which searches for water in its impressive growth. And then there is the 'Wedding Cake', one of the most beautiful dripstone formations in Europe. The accessible part of the cave is comfortably visitable and also accessible for wheelchair users. Altogether, the cave stretches over 645 meters, with a width of 2 to 7 meters and a height of 2.5 to 8 meters. What fascinates us time and again is the constant temperature of about 11°C that the cave maintains throughout the year. Considering the current temperatures, this will indeed be a trip into spring! At the visitor center 'Cave Worlds', we can immerse ourselves in the fascinating history of the Muschelkalk sea. Here, it is explained in a vivid and multimedia way how the cave was formed and what geological processes are behind it. A film also gives us exciting insights into the non-accessible sections of the cave system. Those who want to continue exploring after visiting the cave can head onto the Geological Trail or the adjacent Nature Trail. And for a small break, the lakeside terrace, a popular excursion restaurant directly by the cave lake, offers a perfect spot to recharge after an exciting trip and enjoy the impressions in peace. A visit to the Eberstadt dripstone cave is always a special experience – for young and old, for families, nature lovers, and explorers. Here, one can experience the impressive power of nature up close and learn more about the geological secrets that make this cave a unique destination.
