BADENWEILER - The Mediterranean Soul of the Black Forest

It is a place located on the golden side of the Black Forest, blessed with nearly 1700 hours of sunshine a year and surrounded by vast vineyards of the Markgräflerland. At an altitude of 425 meters, it enjoys a mild, soothing climate that, along with the nearly Mediterranean landscape, creates a unique, relaxing atmosphere. The heart of this place is its thermal water, which carves its way through the ancient rock of the Black Forest, enriched with healing powers – perfectly complemented by natural mud from the nearby Kaiserstuhl. This magic has been captivating people for nearly two millennia. During Emperor Vespasian's reign, the Romans conquered this region and discovered the valuable spring. Even today, the impressive ruins of their grand thermal complex testify to this era. With a length of 93 meters and a width of 33 meters, adorned with murals and large glass windows that captured the light, it was once a monumental structure and is now considered the best-preserved thermal bath north of the Alps. Above the ancient site watched the goddess Diana Abnoba, whose name is immortalized on a dedication stone. The settlement grew, attracted by the healing properties of the water and favored by military outposts and well-developed roads, but with the conquest by the Germans in AD 259, it fell into a long slumber. The stones of the Roman magnificent buildings were repurposed over the centuries for other constructions until, in the search for usable material, the ancient foundations were rediscovered. Today, a modern glass roof lightly and protectively hovers over these testimonies of the past. Badenweiler has developed into a popular holiday destination for those seeking relaxation – whether actively in the splendid nature, culturally curious, or in search of deep relaxation. In the midst of this extraordinary ambiance lies the Cassiopeia Therme, one of the most beautiful thermal baths in Germany. Spanning 3,800 square meters, various thermal pools, a sauna landscape, and a Roman-Irish bath invite relaxation.
