First, diverse impressions

Athens is a fascinating blend of ancient and modern, tradition and innovation.

My first tour of the city was quite spontaneous, and as often happens, especially interesting places are discovered.

The start on the hotel roof gave me my first comprehensive view of Athens, especially Mount Lycabettus with the St. George's Chapel at the top.

After that, I continued to Syntagma Square, the central square in the heart of Athens, and the Monument of the Unknown Soldier. Both in beautiful sunset light 🌅

While walking through the bustling streets of Athens, I stumbled upon the Kapnikarea Church right in the middle of Ermou Shopping Street. This Byzantine church from the 11th century was built, like many sacred buildings in Athens, on the remains of an ancient temple. What particularly caught my eye was the naturalness with which Athenians practice their faith there. It seemed almost incidental how believers interrupted their shopping for a small prayer, lit a candle, and then moved on.

Even in the metro, I encountered surprising places. In the Athenian underground, not only do metros run, but there are also small libraries and musical surprises to be found….
