A Stolen Caryatid

The last day in Athens brought another museum for archaeology 😉

The Acropolis Museum sits at the southern slope of the Acropolis hill and primarily showcases the majority of the recovered reliefs and statues from the Parthenon, Erechtheion, and other temples of the Acropolis, which must be preserved due to their condition. Among these are also the predecessors to the temples visible today on the Acropolis.

For instance, the Caryatids, statues of young women, are displayed there in their original form, while only copies can be seen at the Erechtheion. Unfortunately, the sixth one is missing. It was taken to London by the British Lord Elgin in the 19th century. Works of art stolen as described in the book….. 😑

To gain more context about the temples and their history, the museum is definitely worth recommending. And beneath the museum, there is an excavation site featuring houses from the 4th to 6th century AD to admire.

Afterwards, I couldn't resist and went up to the Acropolis once more. The temples looked even more beautiful in the evening light, and I could also see the Theater of Dionysus, which made it the right decision.
