Day 3: The Medina of Fez

The Madrasa Bou Inania in Fès is among the most beautiful Quran schools in Morocco. It was built in the 14th century under Sultan Abu Inan Faris and impresses with ornate mosaics, intricate wood carvings, and richly decorated stucco. Unlike many other historical Quran schools, it served as both a school and a mosque. The vendors are pleasantly unobtrusive. I am very grateful for that, because I admit I was a bit afraid of it. In the butcher shops, whole animals hang and lie in the display, freshly slaughtered and processed. In the back of the small shops, poor little chickens and others are sitting in tiny cages, waiting for their end. It makes my stomach turn - terrible. I'm also at odds with the sheep heads and animal feet – as a vegetarian, it's hard to bear. Quickly out of here.</p><figure> <source type='image/avif'></source><source></source> <source type='image/avif'></source> <source></source> <img src='https://img1.vakantio.de/uploads/64267f608b5808946a25a3013be18373_small.jpg' /> <figcaption>Delicacies...</figcaption></figure><p>However, the fruit and vegetable stands are truly tempting. Unfortunately, one must be extremely careful as a tourist and not consume any fruit/vegetables with peel. It could cause gastrointestinal issues. So: just looking.</p><p>What is quite striking here are the many cats! I've never seen so many cats. From a cat with kittens just a few days old to blind, old cats that can hardly move. The only silver lining: the cats are fed everywhere, and little boxes are placed for the pregnant cats where they can care for their kittens. Still...soooo many kittens.</p><p>We walk out of the Medina to the city gate Bab Chems. Here we are surprised by a huge police presence and hundreds of people in running suits and t-shirts. In the large square in front of the gate, the finish line of the 10km long run from gate to gate in Fès is taking place. Many runners have already reached the goal and have medals around their necks. We make a short detour to <i>Palais Mnebhi</i>, which we stumble upon by chance. On the way there, it gets quite crowded in the Souk, because from now on, the tour groups are also out and they typically come with an average of 40 people. The Nejjarine Museum is housed in a restored 18th-century building that used to serve as an inn and warehouse for traveling merchants. Today, it showcases the traditional art of Moroccan woodwork. Especially impressive are the richly decorated courtyard with its zellij mosaics, the intricate wood carvings, and the historical architecture. From the rooftop terrace, there is also a beautiful view of the old town of Fès. We enjoy that the most. We treat ourselves to a drink up there under an umbrella and spot our Riad at the edge of the Medina in the distance. The many animal skins and leather shops show that we are approaching the smaller tannery <i>Tanneries de Fes</i>. Through one of the leather shops, we go up onto the roof, from where we can overlook the tannery. In the colored stone basins, animal hides are still tanned and dyed using traditional methods today. Luckily, there are no smell photos. It really stinks. To combat the smell, we are handed fresh mint to hold to our noses. After we've seen enough, they, of course, want to persuade us to buy leather products in the store, but after several

It was built in the 17th century during the Saadian dynasty and served as accommodation and training center for Quran students. It is one of the largest Medersas in the city and compared to the Quran school this morning, it is less crowded and rather simple, but also features intricate woodwork, stucco decorations, and a quiet courtyard. We scan the square, it's pleasantly warm in the sun, but we can't find it. We walk back into the Medina parallel through a local souk. Later we read on the internet that the city gate no longer exists. Apparently, it was “dismantled” to make room for parking spaces. All that remains is the image from the internet. In the alleys, we encounter a man with a donkey who has just unloaded hides at the tannery. Again, we go through a shop onto the roof, still with mint in hand. It stinks, but the view is pretty cool.</p><p>There is clearly more going on here than at the smaller tannery. However, the smell is just as bad.</p><p>We see several pack donkeys being driven down the narrow alley down stairs towards the tannery. It was built in 1325 and served as a Quran school for students of the nearby Qarawiyyin Mosque. Here too, we find intricate stucco work, mosaics, and finely carved cedar wood decorations. We briefly stop by the Bab Guissa parking lot, our car is still there, and then we walk back to the Riad. We have ordered dinner at the Riad again for this evening (20 € vegetarian per person / 25€ with meat per person). Bushra prepares another delicious dinner for us, and with traditional mint tea on the terrace, we wind down the evening. The whole scene is accompanied by the call of the muezzin echoing through the Medina.
