Heute brachte mich meine Shinkansen-Fahrt in schnellen drei Stunden nach Kanazawa. Während ich auf den Zug wartete, nahm ich mir die Zeit, das Gleis zu studieren (wie man es...

Ah, the charm of Kanazawa! I must confess, after indulging in a hearty German breakfast and dining at an Italian pizzeria, I’ve momentarily turned my back on fish – a necessary break 😉
Kanazawa, bustling yet utterly charming, is a treasure trove of discoveries. My first stop: the famous Kenroku-en Gardens. A masterpiece of the Edo period, crafted by the Maeda clan. It’s one of Japan’s Three Great Gardens, and I can certainly see why. The beauty there could make even the most hardened cynic weep. The moss-covered ground is so immaculately groomed, by gardeners who easily could work in a nail studio!! An absolute ‘masterpiece’. I was floored by the serenity – truly one of those rare moments where you feel deeply connected to both nature and, dare I say, the cosmos.
From there, I meandered through the Higashi and Kazuemachi Districts – both steeped in tradition, with teahouses where geishas still perform. I stumbled upon a quaint little teahouse offering tea ceremonies, and naturally, curiosity got the better of me. I ventured inside and met a lovely lady, somewhere in her 50s, who had been practising since she was 13! Her current teacher is 83, and the one before lived to 103 – clearly, there’s something to that Zen lifestyle! I opted for the tea ceremony (though, in retrospect, I should not have skipped the meal part). It’s a meticulous affair – every movement so deliberate, so graceful, that I was almost hypnotised by it all. Matcha, as it turns out, packs quite the punch caffeine-wise. Lesson learned: always have a solid foundation in the stomach before partaking!
With my mind still in a meditative haze, I wandered to the Omicho Market, an absolute hive of activity. Stalls upon stalls of fresh fish, vibrant colours, and enough energy to keep the market buzzing for days. Incidentally, it was Pride Day, and a peaceful, colourful demonstration was happening.
Just a stone’s throw away I spotted a shrine where a stunning couple was getting married in a breathtaking, traditional attire.
Kanazawa offered a whirlwind of moments to savour – serene gardens, tea-induced Zen, bustling markets, and even a splash of Pride. Quite the day to digest, both figuratively and, after skipping that meal, literally!
