Today we visit the Nusfjord, with a short detour to Gimsøy Church.
Gimsøy Church (Norwegian: Gimsøy kirke) is a parish church of the Church of Norway in Skien municipality in Telemark county, Norway. It is located in the Gimsøy district of Skien town. It is one of the churches of the Gimsøy og Nenset parish, which is part of the Skien deanery in the Diocese of Agder og Telemark. The grey stone church was built in 1922 in long church form according to plans by the architect Gunnar Norby. Is a popular photo subject from the Lofoten Islands.
Nusfjord is a fishing village on Flakstadøy, one of the main islands of the Lofoten archipelago. The village belongs to the municipality of Flakstad in the Norwegian county of Nordland. The place was one of the Norwegian pilot projects for the European Year of Monument Protection in 1975.
Archaeological finds show that the area of today's Nusfjord has been inhabited since around 400 AD. Finds of fishing huts from this period show that fishing for commercial purposes was already taking place at that time. In modern times, Nusfjord was the property of the Norwegian crown.
In 1823 and 1843 the Dahl family bought the village and developed it into Lofoten's leading fishing village by 1989. The current property includes 1750 hectares of mountains, five lakes, two historic power stations and around 50 buildings. The village of Nusfjord can now be visited as an open-air museum during the summer months.
