Lofoten 3-15.March 2024,8.March

Today we want to explore Svolvaer on foot. We climb a small path towards Svolvaergeita, as far as the snow conditions allow, and have a great view over the whole of Svolvaer. We visit the harbor and the many stockfish racks (many are already full of fish).

Svolværgeita or Geita (Northern Sami: Spålla) is a 150-metre-high peak on the southwest face of the mountain Fløyfjellet on the island of Austvågøya in the Lofoten archipelago. The 569-metre-high Fløyfjellet lies on the outskirts of the town of Svolvær in Vågan municipality in Nordland county, Norway. The first mountaineer to reach the summit of Svolværgeita was recorded on 1 August 1910 by Ferdinand Schjelderup, Alf Bonnevie Bryn and Carl Wilhelm Rubenson.

The 1910 route was first climbed by Bryn, Schjelderup and Rubinson. They reached the summit on August 1, 1910 at 23:00. Their route includes a diagonal traverse of the north face of the mountain, led by Rubinson. Before the climb, the three had bet a local hotel owner for a bottle of wine that they would reach the Goat summit. The group of Bryn, Schjelderup and Rubinson had recently completed the first successful ascent of Stetind on July 30. Two days later, on August 3, the same group made the first ascent of Trakta, one of the most difficult peaks to reach in Norway. In the evening we can once again enjoy an incredible northern lights show.
