Is it absolutely necessary to see Liège? Probably not. Liège (Lüttich/Luik) is not a city that flaunts its beauty to the first person. Besides, it is currently a construction site in the center due to the construction of a new tram.
But even this is an indication that they believe in the future here. Another such signal would be the spectacular Liège-Guillemins main train station, designed by Santiago Calatrava and completed in 2009. Unfortunately, we missed this attraction as we only had a short city walk at the end of our two-month trip.
Instead, we made another discovery: The St. Paul's Cathedral in the heart of Liège is absolutely worth seeing. Especially because of the magnificent stained glass windows from the 16th century.
In addition, the Zurich artist Gottfried Honegger, a representative of constructivist-concrete art, designed eighteen upper windows for the Gothic cathedral's nave and transepts. They were made as copper-framed glass mosaics in Chartres and installed in the church in 2013 and 2014. The delicate play with light and colors is incredibly beautiful.
But the university city has its own charm because it simply is what it is. Without trying to be different. Relaxing. And that's how our city walk was too.
