Stewart-Cassiar Highway, Part 2

已发表: 12.09.2022

We briefly considered going back to Hyder to capture some missed photos, but we decided against it due to time and fog. So we headed back on the Glacier Highway, as Stewart and Hyder are dead ends.

Once back on the Stewart-Cassiar Highway, we initially went in the 'wrong' direction because according to the highway tourist brochure, there should be a bridge over a small river where you can often see bears. None were there the day before, but it's worth a look. When we arrived, surprisingly there were already several cars, whose occupants were looking around with binoculars and cameras. Well, in a situation like that, you just join in and wait - and lo and behold, out of nowhere a rather large bear came walking along the road, but unfortunately disappeared into the bushes. We waited for a while longer, then gave up and drove to another river where some people were standing, and they told us that a bear had been there a few minutes before we arrived. Hmm, came at the wrong time again. So, back on the road to continue today's 500 km journey. When we arrived at the first bridge, we saw that all the remaining cameras were pointed in one direction and periodically shaken. So we stopped again, got out of the car - and there was the bear in the river. Over the next half hour, the bear put on a show that even the locals who were also taking pictures had never seen before. The grizzly had caught a salmon and kept shaking it wildly in the air. Truly impressive! It seems we had arrived at just the right time! It's a good thing we didn't go back to Hyder...

The rest of the drive was uneventful. The scenery was beautiful, but there were hardly any opportunities to stop and take pictures, especially since we could only go forward because the trees on the sides of the road blocked any view. What a shame...

The final stop was Jade City, which may be familiar to fans of the quality channel DMAX... here, a family mines and processes jade and was followed by a TV crew for several years. Since we had watched the show from time to time, we were curious to see if we would recognize anything. And sure enough, everything looked exactly the same as on TV, the place consists only of the jade shop and everything that goes with it. Of course, we had to get a souvenir, and we actually met the jade miner - Claudia - in person at the store, cool!
