Our zipline tour in Whistler deserves its own entry. Of our entire vacation, this was one of the best days. The tour was incredibly fun :D
First, we had to sign a waiver at the meeting point, acknowledging the risks of the tour and agreeing not to sue anyone in case of death. We also had to provide an emergency contact. It may sound drastic, but it's common for these kinds of activities here. From the village, we were then driven into the forest by shuttle, all the way to the lower end of the zipline. There, we received a short briefing and immediately had to put on the 'suits.' The whole zipline tour was estimated to take three hours. We understood from the website that we had to hike up the mountain first to reach the top of the zipline. I started having doubts on the way to the forest with the shuttle, as there was suddenly snow and none of us had suitable shoes for a snow hike. After donning the suits, it was announced: get in the cars, we are now driving up the mountain.
Okay, I thought, then we don't have to walk that far. We got into the cars, which were a mix of golf carts and off-road vehicles, had to put on full helmets, and off we went. Straight into the mud. The mountain road we drove up was completely soaked, and I just thought how fortunate we didn't have to walk here. On the halfway point, we stopped and switched to snowmobiles. The higher we went, the less mud there was and the higher the snow. Doubts crept back up, wondering how we would manage the last stretch on foot with our shoes. This ride could have been a lot of fun (Kerstin loved it and wanted to do it again right away), but since for most of the time, we were going down next to the road and got very close to the edge in the deep snow, I was very relieved when we finally arrived at the top. It turned out we didn't have to walk anymore but were dropped off right at the top of the zipline :)
When you stand at the top of the zipline, you start feeling a bit uneasy. The end of the zipline is not even visible, so to speak, you're flying into nothingness. Even though I have a fear of heights (which became very apparent on top of Jasper mountain), once I was strapped in and secured, it wasn't a big problem anymore. I trust in the safety of the technology. I admit that the first few meters of the zipline made my stomach tingle, but I wasn't scared. It is an incredible feeling to be hanging so far above the ground and to fly down the mountain at high speed.
At the end of the zipline, we were elated and at the same time saddened that it ended so quickly. Until we realized that this zipline was only the first of several ziplines that took us down the mountain :) So we could experience the feeling several times, and enjoy it more each time. I even managed to take some photos during the ride :D
We would definitely do a zipline tour again if the opportunity arises!
