Breakfast, Beach Life & GB OIL - Gela, Sizilien

The town of Gela in south-eastern Sicily is unknown as a holiday resort - fortunately! Here you spend your vacation less than 70k read - nobody speaks German here. This is what a typical day in Gela can look like.

Breakfast

Well, almost nobody speaks German here, unless you made the right choice for breakfast and are sitting in the Roc Bar with your cappuccino & cornetto. With a bit of luck, you'll meet the cheerful guy who will give you a friendly "What's up, boys?" welcomed. A few years in Frankfurt leave their mark. :)

The Roc Bar is open from 7 a.m. and you sit right on the main street between citrus trees, Fiats and Piaggios.

Beach Life

After breakfast we head to the sea! Gela is right by the sea and has a very good beach for swimming. The beach right next to the city is cleaned regularly. Don't forget: parasol & sunscreen - you can buy the parasols directly on the street on the beach (approx. 20 EUR).

There are many restaurants on the promenade down by the beach, most of which are full to bursting in the evenings. Here are the top restaurants in Gela.

Disìu - Bistrot Siciliano

By far the nicest restaurant in Gela. Everything is just right here: the atmosphere, the food and the people. A reservation is mandatory here, preferably even a few days in advance.

Comu Si Chiama

Pizza, pizza, pizza. And be sure to sit outside under the fairy lights. Nice atmosphere and even nicer pizzas. It's always busy, so it's best to make a reservation or drop by an hour in advance. Prices range from 7 to 9 EUR per pizza.

Athena Pizzeria Ristorante

The go-to restaurant down the promenade. Good pizzas, good appetizers (chips are a must!). Try!

GB Oil - Probably the best petrol station in the world

A slightly strange habit of the locals is to hang out at the GB Oil petrol station. But with good reason! Here you can get fresh cornetti from 4 a.m. – perfect to end the night or to start the next day.

getting there

The best way to get to Gela is to take the ETNA Trasporti bus from Catania Airport (CTA). The buses usually run every hour (eight minutes past the hour) and then every two hours from 8 a.m. The bus stop is located directly at the airport exit on the right. There you will also find the small bus ticket booths. The trip to Gela takes about 90 minutes and costs EUR 8 per person. The buses, although a bit worn, are well air-conditioned.
