To get from northern Thailand to the southern island of Ko Phangan, we had to take a 2-day train journey.
Our first 11-hour train ride from Chiang Mai to Bangkok was spent in a fairly decent second-class wagon. However, the air conditioning was set so cold that we almost froze even with long pants and a sweater :)
We then spent another night in Bangkok before continuing the next day with the night train to the port city of Surat Thani.
The ride was much more comfortable, but we found very little sleep in the shaky beds.
Arriving at Surat Thani train station at 6 am, we had to take a mini van to the port to board the ferry to Ko Phangan.
After the long journey, we finally arrived at our accommodation.
We spent the last few days here in a small bungalow right by the sea.
Ko Phangan is mainly known for the Full Moon Parties that take place here. However, it has much more to offer than just parties. A large part of the island is a nature reserve, and over the years, it has developed a special flair with a community of dropouts, hippies, and backpackers.
So we jumped on the scooter to explore the beautiful beaches and landscapes. (The whole thing went smoothly, except that we had to change the battery at our trusted workshop in between)
We enjoyed the unique sunsets every evening with a refreshing Chang beer.
Since we can't get enough of the sun, beach, and sea, we will be going to the neighboring island of Ko Samui tomorrow before entering the second country of our adventure.
Stay tuned!
