Satonda - Saltwater Lake and Bat Colony (Star Clipper Cruise - Day 2)

E hatisitsoe: 29.09.2018

The second island we visited was Satonda, which was formed by the eruption of an underwater volcano. This created a chain of hills around a saltwater lake, making this island unique.

We climbed the hills to get a view of the lake in the middle of the island. Fortunately, we had set off in the morning, so it wasn't too hot yet.

After enjoying the beautiful view, we continued along the path, which initially led through the forest and then towards the sea on the other side of the island. From a hilltop, we had a clear view of trees that were filled with bats, who had taken up their sleeping spots there. Some were also flying around, looking for a new tree to hang out on.

We were not sure if we should turn back. The rest of our hiking group had already turned back after the first viewpoint, so we were alone and hoping not to encounter any hostile monkeys.

The path went steeply downhill, making us sincerely hope that we wouldn't have to go all the way back. Eventually, we reached the beach and decided to look for a new path along this one to avoid the uphill climb.

So we walked along the sandy beach and saw - along with a lot of washed-up plastic trash - some beautiful seashells. Then the easily accessible sandy beach ended and we had to climb over rocks to get back to the boat that would take us back to the ship.
