Day 6 Nordkapp-Hammerfest-Tromsø

MIVOAKA: 22.08.2020

That was a long day. But let's start from the beginning.

After breakfast, we started at 8:30 am.

As a child, I always imagined living in Hammerfest as a "German Viking" and going on raids from there. Probably because the name sounds so German. But it has nothing to do with German vocabulary. The name is composed of the Old Norse words Hamarr (steep mountain slope) and Festr (to anchor a boat). Well, my naturalization didn't work out.

By the way, Hammerfest is the northernmost city in the world, neither Siberia nor Alaska have a larger settlement further north.

I had the opportunity to visit the Meridian Monument there. The history behind it is very interesting and I can highly recommend reading about it. By the way, there was also a Hurtigruten ship anchored next to it at the harbor.

Then we continued. My destination today is Tromsø, the unofficial capital of Northern Norway. I will stay there for 2 days to rest and recover from the long kilometers. As you can see from the data, the distance covered was 600 km. With a maximum speed limit of 80 km/h and many sections with speed limits of 50 or 60, it took until 9:00 pm to reach my destination. If the scenery hadn't been so beautiful, it could have been called "Tor-tour".

Oh, by the way, I took a ferry twice or I wouldn't have made it to Tromsø by this time. Once from Olderdalen to Lyngseidet, and shortly after that from Svensby to Breivikeidet.

Then over the huge curved bridge to Tromsø island, checked into the hotel, and took a shower. Afterwards, around 10:00 pm, I went for a beer in the old town, which is within walking distance from the hotel. Since Corona, there is a curfew at midnight. But I wasn't kicked out of a bar, I was already back in bed at midnight.
