Calais

MIVOAKA: 28.08.2023

Completely exhausted from the mass (we hadn't walked 12,000 steps in one day for a long time!) we set off for Calais early on Sunday. Brief stop at a rest area in Belgium to put up the "chic" blind spot warning signs that have been mandatory in France for 3 years. Here, for the first time, signs pointed out to make sure that no stowaways got on board. The refugee problem is still relevant, and can also be seen later in Calais from the high barbed wire fences.

For this reason I had quite a head in the planning, we wanted to be sure and stay at a campsite. But two campsites had canceled (full) and we then opted for the official motorhome pitch of the city of Calais. This is fenced and offers space for about 100 mobile homes.

The place is completely ok, we felt safe enough there to drive a little round with our e-scooters to the beach in the evening. The beach promenade is great! Lots of places to sit, lots for kids, watch the ferries come in and out,…

The “prefabricated buildings” in the background didn't fit into the picture so well, but a little further on there were pretty little terraced houses - an exciting mix overall.

On the beach there are small white wooden shacks close together, where we really puzzled what it was all about. Obviously there are private surfing gear, beach chairs, etc. stored there?

In the high season there is probably a huge dragon made of steel and wood running around on the promenade. However, we only saw him in his "garage" through the large windows 🐲. It's a shame, we'll have to come back again!
