Eisenhüttenstadt-Frankfurt-Ortwig

Already at 0800 we are ready to go and leave Reitwein behind us...

...rolling into the new day...

...over the Old Oder...

...along the dam along the Oder river meadows...

...we are just before Küstrin. This former important trading city on State Road 101 - the direct route to Berlin...

...in 1945 the city was declared a fortress - and completely destroyed..

...today peace and tranquility prevail over the land...

...mistletoe...
...on the newly built dam to Kienitz... perfect cycling country!
...past a manor house near Kienitz...
...Kienitz was of crucial importance before the attack on Berlin...
...this monument reminds us of that. Ironically, we are on September 1 - exactly 79 years after the attack on Poland - at this place where the Soviets first crossed the Oder river in 1945...
The present looks like this...
...in the harbor of Kienitz this ship from Amsterdam is moored - until the water level rises again.
The harbor festival helps the Dutch to pass the time...
...formerly a harbor mill - today a guesthouse and restaurant, and in Gross Neuendorf the grain silos were converted into a hotel and lofts...
...with an indescribable view of the Oder river...

We drive the last 5 km to Ortwig....
...where we are warmly welcomed by our friends Katrin and Viktor in the former village school...
Then more guests join, the excitement also increases - half a ox is on the grill... here it is being portioned...
...and then the festival begins with the country women and their companions...
...and lasts quite late into the night...
