28.08.18 - 01.09.18 Kandy

Ebimisami: 02.09.2018

Next on our route was the city of Kandy, located at an elevation of 500m, it is part of the 'Hill country' of Sri Lanka. Kandy's history is marked by its resistance against colonial rule, except for the British. Nowadays, it is primarily a pilgrimage site for Buddhists as it houses a temple where a tooth of the first Buddha is kept.

Maybe it was because Sri Lanka spoiled us with its beauty for the past two weeks, but Kandy was more tiring for us than anything else. Chaotic, noisy, crowded, and with little places to find peace and quiet. On top of that, the dining options were bland and we had to extend our stay from 3 to 4 nights to secure a train ticket for the next stop. All in all, the energy was somehow gone. So we spent three very lazy days in Kandy, decided not to spend 15€ to visit the temple, and accepted not seeing the supposed tooth relic urn. We tried to pass the time in cafes instead. A highlight was definitely a small ice cream parlor that served (vegan) fried ice cream (ice cream made fresh on a frozen plate). And it was somehow funny to see the 'Soya Center', where they have soft serve ice cream and soy wraps filled with soy chunks, which are highly used in curries or vegetable dishes.

Oh, and Mathias finally said goodbye to his long hair.

But we are still doing very well, these short lows are just part of the travel routine :)
