Romania Day 5 - Birthälm Church Fortress

Ebimisami: 23.07.2019

On our fifth day in Romania, we went to the Birthälm Church Fortress, about half an hour away from Mediaş.

There, Bogdan Bergmann guided us around the premises and explained the significance of the different towers. We found the so-called Divorce Tower particularly amusing, as couples who wanted to separate were locked inside and essentially had no other choice but to make amends.

Afterwards, we visited a couple whom Mrs. Lohse had met in the spring and who belonged to the so-called Summer Saxons.

Summer Saxons is a term used for the Transylvanian Saxons who emigrated from Transylvania to Germany but spend their summers in their old house in Transylvania.

This couple had prepared coffee and the walnut cake that we were already familiar with, and we were allowed to tour the typical Transylvanian Saxon house. We were impressed by their openness and hospitality.

After the subsequent lunch, which was a bit disappointing, we returned to the hotel and had about two hours of free time before we set off again to sing our third concert at the Margarethenkirche in Mediaş.

Initially, we had planned to walk to the church, but due to the sudden rain shower, we decided last minute to take the bus instead.

We were initially skeptical about dinner, but we soon realized that this meal was probably the best food we had enjoyed here so far. Everyone was especially excited about the dessert - homemade eclairs.

We actually walked back to the hotel and ended the evening individually once again.
