Kuala Lumpur (KL) - a city where you can see the economic boom of Malaysia the most. The skyscrapers outshine the tall buildings. In between, there are parks that make you forget you're in KL. The city is full of LRTs (elevated trains), underground pedestrian tunnels, and shopping malls that are much bigger than those in Germany, with all the world-famous brands that require you to dig deeper into your pocket.
At night, the city lights up in all imaginable neon colors and billboards that remind you of Times Square in New York.
Looking at the people, you can see that KL is highly developed. Whether Chinese, Indians, Malays, whites, blacks, headscarf wearers, fully veiled or with eccentric summer outfits, you can find everything side by side and it all seems normal. Everyone smiles at you and is accommodating. If you have questions or get lost, there is always someone to help you.
A contrasting metropolis with ~ 8 million inhabitants that is not really made for pedestrians. Either you know where the tunnels lead or you have to take the LRT to the next point. It often happened to us that we suddenly found ourselves in the middle of the street or intersection with no footpath.
KL, like George Town, has a neighborhood called Little India, although it is not as evident as it was in George Town. But there is Chinatown here, which is more evident. Apart from the food and lanterns, it lacked the Chinese flair. One fake stand after another, mostly run by Indians 🤔I wonder what's wrong with that.
In addition, KL is home to the Petronas Towers (twin Towers) which are 451.9m high, and they are very proud of them, although the city has many other towers to offer. Including the KL Tower, which is 424m high. When you are on this tower, you have a fantastic view of the whole city... gigantic, day and night.
We have to admit that we got a bit off our rhythm in Kuala Lumpur and spent more time in the dark than during the day because by the time we got out of our apartment and out of the pool, it was usually afternoon, and it's dark here by 8 pm. Also, I (Emely) got sick in between, so we didn't even go to the city center. But it wasn't a problem that we were often out in the dark because those who know Finn know that he loves to photograph at night, and the city had a lot to offer in that regard.
So in Kuala Lumpur, we enjoyed a lot of luxury. Whether it's the apartment with security throughout the compound and at the entrance, who always greets you and wishes you a nice day, or the Grab (similar to Uber/Taxi), which we almost always took to get from A to B. Whether we were allowed to visit a radio station and see the office and studio. Whether we relaxed with an important presenter and a whiskey by the pool or celebrated Hari Raya with a Muslim family. It's already hard for us to move on.
Because all this has made us a bit travel-worn, but now we will limit our lives to a backpack again and make our way to Singapore.
The time in Kuala Lumpur will always be remembered positively for us. ❤️
