9.10.2018 Halifax

Weşandin: 11.10.2018

Now the time has come and after 2 days at sea we arrive in Halifax. I admire the harbor entrance from the treadmill and Mom from our balcony. Halifax had a great importance as a port city for the English in colonial times and still does. It is the northernmost port that is ice-free all year round and the crossing from Europe takes one day less. In the morning we set off on land, explore the harbor area, which offers a beautiful boardwalk. The harbor was important during wartime and here in 1917 the largest explosion before Hiroshima occurred when two warships collided with ammunition, Halifax also has a great immigration history. Everything is explained nicely on the boardwalk. We also visit the Citadel and the Victorian Public Garden in detail, and then we quickly return to the ship because we have booked an excursion in the afternoon. Due to a map reading error on my part, we take a detour.

In the afternoon we will drive by car to Peggy's Cove, a picturesque fishing village on the coast. Lobster fishing is a main source of income here, so we treat ourselves to a delicious lobster roll. We really like the place with its lighthouse and round stones from the last ice age.

On the way back, the nice chauffeur points out the memorial of the Swissair crash in Halifax to us, before we take a short stroll around the cemetery of the Titanic victims.

In the evening, another highlight awaits us. We redeem Mom's birthday gift at Rossini, the gourmet restaurant on board, and treat ourselves to an excellent 6-course menu.
