Melk Abbey (or is it Stift? - too lazy to google) is the second most visited tourist destination in Austria after Schönbrunn Palace. It is in excellent condition, and we learn that the Benedictines own and manage lands all the way to Romania over time. It is an imposing structure, with 1356 windows (thanks, Paula and Niki :-) towering amidst the beautiful landscape. The town of Melk below is picturesque and charming. Definitely worth a visit!
Afterwards, we drove to Wachau and Michael showed us Spitz and the 'Hinterhaus' Ruin - a beautifully preserved ruin where the children could climb and have a great time.
In the evening, Romy got to cook - and we all enjoyed it. The stay with our friends is truly sensational - cozy, talkative, relaxed: Waltraud and Michael (with Paula and Emil) took great care of us. A heartfelt thank you for the hospitality!
