Surfing at Whiskeypoint and 1000 birds in Yala National Park

Pubblicato: 01.10.2023

From Ella the route takes us to Pottuvil, a surfing paradise near Arugam Bay. We take up accommodation in the beautifully furnished Monsoon Eco Resort, where we are treated to healthy and delicious food.

You can endure it here

Deciding between fresh papaya, mango, passion fruit or watermelon juice is not always easy.

When the waves are good, Magnus takes surfing lessons, unfortunately Leonie has a bit of a problem. Last year, Whiskeypoint was one of the best breakpoints in the country, unfortunately a sandbank has shifted after construction work and the waves no longer break there as they should. But there are enough other surf spots =)

Stable waves

Surfing means waiting a long time for the wave, most of the time you get under the wave or it runs away from you, but sometimes it works.

We rent a scooter and explore the surroundings; an encounter with pachyderms is inevitable.

Arugam Bay has a very western surfing community (especially customers from Israel) and for once we eat less rice ;)

even more soul food

One of the excursions takes us to Elephant Rock for sunset.

And the sunsets can really be seen here!

Stressful afternoon...

Another excursion takes us to Lighthouse Beach, where we spend the day on the beach bed, reading, eating delicious food and relaxing with a view of the sea.

Farm accommodation

After 5 days at the sea we head inland, here we spend a night at the Kingdom Eco Lodge and Farm, a farm near the Yala National Park, with an evening elephant sighting (herd with babies) and a morning rowing tour on the lake around which we are flown by pelicans, eagles, bee-eaters and countless other birds.

A chameleon and two monitor lizards join us at the open-air breakfast.

The further route will take us to Rekawa in the south of the island, where the turtles dare to lay their eggs on the untouched beaches at night. Maybe we'll see it =)
