Dying Swan

Pubblicato: 26.09.2023

«Nolay, a typical town of the Hautes-Côtes de Beaune, is nestled in a valley between vineyards and cliffs. It has retained charming medieval architecture and exceptional market halls that testify to a long trading tradition.” This is how the tourism office advertises the medieval town.

When you visit, however, a completely different picture emerges (unfortunately): Most of the shops have closed in recent years, and the former shop windows are covered with posters. It feels like every third house is for sale (probably an almost hopeless undertaking...), the shutters are closed and boarded up. The only busy place is the bistro on the main square in front of the market hall. The only impressive things are the town hall and the monument to Lazare Carnot, who was born in Nolay, a brilliant scientist and student of Gaspard Monge, an officer of the king. He was enthusiastic about the ideas of the revolution. The statue shows the man of science with his compass commanding victory.

The return trip by bike, partly on a former railway line (with a tunnel!), is definitely worth it!
